Assessments
The best way to determine the extent of a child’s needs is through comprehensive screening and evaluations conducted by our seasoned professionals. Working with your staff, APTUS will evaluate students using the most current methodologies in the following areas:
- Psychological Assessment (conducted by a school psychologist) - These evaluations may include cognitive assessments, social-emotional assessments, social-cultural assessments, and measures of adaptive functioning.
- Cognitive assessments measure a student's intellectual abilities. They give general information relative to other students the same age. These tests shows how well a student problem solves, how they best interpret information (visual, auditory, etc.), and measure other areas such as memory and frequency and fluency of processing information.
- Social and emotional assessments may be conducted formally or informally to measure a variety of social and emotional disabilities that may be impacting a student’s performance.
- Socio-cultural Assessments may be conducted formally or informally – Parents and other stakeholders are interviewed to obtain information regarding the student that may be pertinent to eligibility. Developmental history is reviewed, as home environment, access to educational resources, and important life changes are discussed. Often adaptive behavior is also assessed.
- Educational Assessments (conducted by a Special Education Teacher) – These are assessments that compare a student's academic functioning with other students of the same age. The assessments focus on Reading, Writing, Math, and Oral Language.
- Specific Specialty Area Testing (conducted by a specialist in each area) - If there are concerns with speech and language, a Speech Therapist will conduct an assessment. If the concerns are in motor skills, an Occupational Therapist will do an assessment for fine motor skills or a Physical Therapist for gross motor skills. If the student's hearing or vision is in question, an appropriate person will do an evaluation.
- Other information that may be reviewed
- Medical records (when a medical condition is suspected to be causing difficulty in school)
- Classroom observations and teacher reports
- Hearing and vision screenings
